Brief: What is the definition of ‘fake’? If opposed to ‘real’ or ‘genuine’, then what are the definitions of these? Is fake the new real? Can fake have positive connotations? Using the word “FAKE” as a starting point, develop a self-initiated design project that will demonstrate a synthesis of your design skills.

Outcome: For this project I decided to chose college life as a focus, touching on how new students feel leaving home and stepping into the “Real World” for the first time. A lot of leaflets with advice for college life can sound patronising or boring to students, despite being helpful. In response to this I decided to create something that pushes the standard, safe approach to one side. My goal was to make a themed “Survival pack” to be given out to students during freshers week. To stand out, the pack along with it’s advice booklet has taken the survival theme and amplified it to take place during a fake zombie apocalypse, setting the tone for the imagery throughout. Despite the theme being over the top and fake, it deals with real problems and gives relevant advice to the reader.
